Yard Sale Shelf to Salon-Style Beauty

You Never Know What You May Find

If you are like us Junque Market folk, you randomly stop at yard sales whenever you come across one. Last summer, my hunk was going somewhere and spotted a good yard sale that he couldn’t pass up. Unfortunately, I was still at my 9 to 5. Not fair, right?!?

Well, at this yard sale, he came across an interesting looking shelf. Guess how much he paid for it. Only 5 bucks! He always finds the good deals...and I am only just a tad bit jealous of that, lol.

What to Do, What to Do

I knew instantly that I loved it and wanted to keep it. But what was I gonna do with it? I finally decided that I wanted a common place for all our nail polishes  to be stored. At the time, they were scattered throughout the house in bedrooms and bathroom cabinets. That’s life with three ladies who love to be dolled up!

This shelf was perfect, especially with its narrow shelves, to store our nail polishes. To me, those columns are just a great way to keep the polishes organized. Just like the nail salon! So, I had decided what I wanted to do with this great shelf thing, and then I let it sit...for months...in a corner of our house.

Then Along Comes Country Chic Paint

That's right. That poor ol' shelf sat in the corner. That is, until I got my hands on some of that awesome Country Chic Paint! Lucky me! I was inspired to finally try my hand at distressing that shelf I had let sit in the corner for months.

I specifically chose Country Chic Paint's All In One Décor Paint in Luscious Lime and Antiquing Wax to distress the shelf. I could already envision the loveliness that would be mounted upon our bathroom wall to display our huge collection of nail polish.

Yard Sale Shelf to Beauty Beyond Belief

The shelf was already in great condition. It didn't require any sanding and after a quick wipe down, it was ready for its first coat of Country Chic Paint's All In One Décor Paint in Luscious Lime. This lively color was going to look perfect with all the different nail polish colors on it!

Since Country Chic Paint is zero VOC and emits hardly any odor, I painted the shelf while in my living room. It is so awesome to be able to do your favorite hobby while getting to interact with your family! You can even let the kiddies help out without worrying about toxic fumes. After some painting lessons for my daughter and two coats of paint, this shelf was ready for some Antiquing Wax

Now Comes the Hard Part

I had never used any type of antiquing wax before, so I was a little apprehensive going into this part of my project. I knew I didn't want to cover the entire shelf in the wax. I wanted that Luscious Lime color to be able to pop against my bathroom wall.

I had an idea that I wanted to try. Yes, I was nervous, but you only live once! LOL! After watching Country Chic Paint's awesome tutorial, How To Antique Wax Furniture, I felt I was ready to go. Here goes nothing!

I used a stiff bristled artist's brush to apply the Antiquing Wax to various places on the shelf where dust would naturally build up over time. After applying the wax, I rubbed any excess away with a lint free cloth, aka one of my hubba bubba's old t-shirts.

Not So Bad After All

I was quite pleased with how the antiquing turned out. The Country Chic Paint Antiquing Wax was very easy to manipulate and work with. It was so easy, in fact, that it turned any anxiety I had about working with the antiquing wax into pure fun! I loved it! And I was squealing in delight as I was creating this beauty.

Having never really antiqued anything before, I am pretty impressed with how my salon style nail polish shelf turned out. It looks pretty awesome in my Boho inspired bathroom! Country Chic Paint is addictive, and I am happily anticipating my next project!
